Pub and Restaurant, The Dog & Duck, in Emmbrook, re-opens on Wednesday 15th November following a major refurbishment by owners, Brakspear. Dating from the 1700s, this traditional red brick pub began serving beer in 1851. Brakspear Brewery bought the pub in 1857 and it’s been well-supported by the local community ever since. The pub will continue to be a warm, welcoming and relaxing place to enjoy drinks, lunch and dinner with friends and family.
Brakspear’s in-house design team has given the Dog & Duck a sensitive refurbishment to retain and highlight many of its original features, including parquet flooring, natural oak beams, exposed brick walls and large sash windows. Relaxing, warm and cosy, the Bar area has a traditional feel using a palette of warm reds and cosy greens along with contemporary touches and vintage detailing. There’s a wood-burning stove, an old oak-topped bar fronted with reclaimed floorboards and above, copper pendant lights. On the walls, antique prints of the local area and furnishings include old Dutch pews, a long, drinking table and mismatched tables and chairs, along with a large screen TV showing regular live sporting events.
Behind the Bar, an extensive drinks list of classic cocktails and 10 specialty gins including Hawthorn’s, Silent Pool and Tarquin’s Cornish. The Dog & Duck’s wine list includes three champagnes and Prosecco and 15 wines by the glass, and 33 by the bottle. The bar also stocks a range of craft beers including, Brooklyn, Sierra Nevada, Innis & Gunn and Goose Island, world beers and ciders.
The Dog & Duck’s large, airy dining space seats 130 and is bathed in natural light from three huge light wells, with bi-folding doors opening on to a large, enclosed garden. Walls, come clad in painted panelling, reclaimed timbers or Mulberry’s ‘Flying Duck’ wallpaper, with additional lighting provided by oversize basket pendant lights.
The Dog & Duck’s delicious and accessible menu offers hearty, seasonal British pub classics with a modern twist executed to a high standard, including steaks, beer-battered fish & chips, bangers and mash, burgers, grills and salads. Pizzas with sour dough or spelt bases, are made-to-order and cooked in the kitchen’s wood-fired pizza oven.
The lunch menu includes open sandwiches, an express menu for those short of time, and a specially designed children’s menu featuring favourites such as fish & chips, fresh chicken goujons and a 5” Margarita pizza.
The Dog & Duck’s Sunday lunch offers a Carvery menu includes beef, pork, turkey and gammon, served with Yorkshire pudding and all the trimmings for £15.50pp.
“We’re excited to be part of the local community here,” says manager, Mark Gray. We’ll be hosting numerous events over the year, including the JPRA Annual Christmas Carols Concert, which will be held in our carpark on Sunday 10th December at 4pm.
The Dog & Duck is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner and drinks, including Christmas Day. Over the forthcoming season, a festive menu will be available. Customers are welcome to drink or dine anywhere in the bar or restaurant area. Dogs are welcome in the bar.
