Proposals to build a new primary school in Newbury have been approved.
West Berkshire Council and Newbury College have finalised an agreement whereby the Council will build a new primary school on the College campus in Newbury. The school will be sponsored by Newbury College and it is hoped that it will welcome the first intake of children at the beginning of the 2019-20 academic year.
Speaking about this very positive development, Lynne Doherty, West Berkshire’s Executive Member for Education and Jeanette Clifford, West Berkshire’s Executive Member for Highways and Transport said, “We are very pleased to be working with the College on this important project. Working with the strength of collaboration, we can look forward to making this much needed and beautifully designed school a reality.”
Geoff Knappett, Chair of Governors at Newbury College said: “We are delighted to receive sponsor status for the new school on our site. Working in partnership with West Berkshire Council, we will provide significant expansion to the local education provision and necessary school places for the children of South Newbury.”
A new access will also be created to the College site from the A339 in order to serve the new school, which will also link to the strategic housing site at Sandleford. The new access has been made possible with the assistance of £2 million funding from the Thames Valley Berkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (TVBLEP).
Construction works to deliver the new school will start on site next month.
