EVENTS Winter/Spring 2019: January

Monday 14th January 2019, 10.30am – 12.00pm, West Berkshire Museum (FREE)

Touch To See meets on the second Monday of every month from 10.30am – 12pm at the West Berkshire Museum

The group has access to tactile and audio resources from the Living Paintings library enabling them to explore the work of famous artists, architects and designers, before hearing a guest speaker talk about a related subject.

We also invite local artists to share their work and we’re lucky to have some great local speakers including Newbury Embroiderer’s Guild, ceramicist Ursula Waechter and most recently Silk Artist, Helen Mortimer.

This activity is FREE to attend and no booking is required.

Talk: Sugar and Spice and All Things Nice

Wednesday 16 January 2019, 7-8pm West Berkshire Museum, £5 (Tickets available online and at the museum)

Every November many homes in Europe and North America still waft with the smell of freshly baked gingerbread, cinnamon infused mulled wine and richly spiced fruitcake, puddings and pumpkin pie. Familiar spices such as nutmeg, cloves, allspice, cinnamon and ginger are synonymous with Christmas.  However, the history of these common place spices takes us across time and continents, with people risking life and limb to bring them home.

Following the history and geography of the Spice Trail, researcher and educational consultant Lynda Warren will lead us on a journey to discover their use in cooking, medicines, cosmetics and household purposes, supported by a free handout for those who are interested in finding out more.

Exhibition: The Way We Were in West Berkshire

16 January – 30 September 2019, West Berkshire Museum

A collaborative exhibition with the Newbury and Thatcham Past and Present Facebook group using objects and photographs from the museum collection to collect memories and develop conversations about our heritage.

See how memories bring objects and pictures to life and watch how this dynamic exhibition evolves as visitors add their personal stories.

Together with the members of the group, we will build a picture through memories, to bring the past alive.
