Faust x2 @ The Watermill Theatre
Mar 2 @ 7:30 pm – Mar 25 @ 10:00 pm
Faust x2 @ The Watermill Theatre | Bagnor | England | United Kingdom

The Watermill Theatre presents the premiere of Faust x2, a gripping new adaptation by celebrated actor Ian McDiarmid of Goethe’s immortal legend of Faust. Faust is a brilliant but frustrated academic. Disillusioned by his never ending quest for knowledge, he summons up the darkest of powers to free him from his misery. Making a deal with the devilish Mephisto, Faust promises to serve him once he is satisfied his desires have been met. But quickly he is captivated by the beautiful Gretchen and Faust commits himself to winning her heart. At whatever cost.

Olivier and Tony award-winning actor Ian McDiarmid, well known for his role as Emperor Palpatine in the Star Wars film series, and numerous stage credits for the RSC, National Theatre and Donmar Warehouse plays the titular role and brings Goethe’s gripping masterpiece to life in this bold new adaptation, staged at The Watermill for the first time.

Lisa Blair is one of the country’s most exciting young directors. She recently directed Contractions at Sheffield Theatres and was associate director on Jude Law’s Henry V and The Merchant of Venice for the RSC and Almeida Theatre.

A powerful story of lust, sacrifice and regret, Faust x2 is a thrilling, atmospheric and moving re-telling of the immortal legend of Faust.

We recommend that this production is suitable for age 12 upwards, but please note that it features scenes of a sexual nature and strong language.

Passiontide @ Douai Abbey
Apr 8 @ 7:45 pm
Passiontide @ Douai Abbey

The Reading Bach Choir continue their 50th anniversary celebrations with three moving insights for Passiontide in the magnificent Douai Abbey on 8th April at 7.45 p.m.

Schutz is generally regarded as the most important German composer before Johann Sebastian Bach. He is often considered one of the most important composers of the 17th century. The Cantiones Sacrae is a collection of forty different pieces of vocal sacred music on Latin texts, first published in 1625. The counterpoint of the Cantiones has been regarded as unmatched in the sacred vocal works of the 17th century.

The four motets for a time of penitence movingly represent the twentieth-century Catholicism of Poulenc. Completed in 1939, the four motets are among Poulenc’s most popular works. The four contrasting texts allow him a variety of vocal colours and harmonies which he uses to vivid emotional and dramatic effect.

Distler was born in Nuremberg and attended Leipzig Conservatory from 1927 to 1931. He is known mostly for his sacred choral music and as a champion of Neo-Baroque music. His works are a re-invention of old forms and genres, rich with word painting, based on the music of Heinrich Schütz and other early composers.

He became increasingly depressed from the deaths of friends, aerial attacks, job pressures and the constant threat of conscription into the German Army and tragically committed suicide at the age of 34 in 1942.
