In the Beginning – Concert by The Cecilia Consort @ Douai Abbey
Nov 3 @ 7:30 pm
In the Beginning - Concert by The Cecilia Consort @ Douai Abbey | Upper Woolhampton | England | United Kingdom

In 1989, soprano, Janet Coxwell, conducted a performance of the Mozart Requiem during the Newbury & District Arts Festival. She also sang the solo part, assuming the evening was to be a ‘one-off’ event but thankfully, several of the choristers from the ad-hoc ensemble begged her to consider making the group a permanent ensemble and so was born The Cecilia Consort. Some of those singers have been with the choir since its inception and many others have clocked up over ten years’ membership so the choir really does feel like an extended family, enjoying social occasions and extra special events such as carol singing in Newbury town centre.
On Saturday 3 November 2018 at 7:30pm, Janet will conduct a programme inspired by the theme ‘O Nata Lux’ (O Light born of light) at Douai Abbey and she is delighted to announce the inclusion of three different pieces by living composers. The lush O Nata Lux by American composer, Guy Forbes will stand alongside a piece of the same title written by British composer, Gabriel Jackson. As ever, the final a cappella offering will see the Abbey returned to its natural state of prayer and meditation and for this purpose, the choir has chosen Illumina by Patrick Hawes.
The titular piece, In The Beginning by Aaron Copland, will feature Janet as its soloist and the Douai audience is also to be treated to a performance of Handel’s breathtaking Eternal Source of Light Divine. The piece was one of the musical highlights at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and Patrick Craig’s unique voice will be complemented by Andrew Smets’s solo trumpet.
If you are a fan of Morten Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium, you’ll love his Lux Aeterna which features in the second half of the concert. He quotes from the former in this deliciously atmospheric piece and his unmistakable use of tightly knit harmonies and intervals is a fitting grand finale to this special programme.
The Cecilia Consort is a 40-strong, mixed voice choir, directed by Janet Coxwell, which performs two or three concerts a year in and around the Newbury area. Tickets cost £15 (£5 for under 18s) and are available online from www.ceciliaconsort.org.uk, or by calling 07775 743445.

The Fir Tree @ Norden Farm Centre for the Arts

by Tove Jansson

From Tales in Moominvalley

The Moomin family was hibernating in the drawing room as they were wont to do. They had been sleeping for a few months already and were going to keep it up until spring… Now all at once a cold draught disturbed Moomintroll’s dreams. And someone was pulling at his quilt and shouting that he was tired and Christmas was coming.

Featuring live puppetry and music, The Fir Tree is an adventure set in the idyllic and peaceful Moominvalley. It is a gloriously unselfish take on Christmas.

Suitable for all audiences from 3 years and upwards.

Presented by Norden Farm, The Ding Foundation, Bernadette Russell and Steve Tiplady.

Tuesday 20 November – Sunday 30 December. Times vary.

Newbury Choral Society presents Handel: Samson @ St Nicolas Church, Newbury
Dec 1 @ 7:30 pm
Newbury Choral Society presents Handel: Samson @ St Nicolas Church, Newbury

Samson is one of Handel’s most enduringly popular works and a favourite in the choral repertoire. It is full of dramatic choruses, rich characters and special Handelian effects. Some of the familiar and well-loved arias, such as Let the bright Seraphim, are often performed separately, but they really need to be experienced in the context of the whole oratorio to be fully appreciated.

Although George Frideric Handel was born in Germany, he became known as a composer of operas and oratorios in England, where he settled in 1712 during the reign of King George II. His success with Esther, based on a drama by Jean Racine, decided him to present it as an opera, but the Bishop of London refused to allow religious works to be presented in what he regarded as a frivolous or profane medium. Handel was forced to present the work in concert form. Although Handel continued to produce operas, this new form of religious drama became very popular, with Deborah and Athalia both appearing in 1733.

Their popularity encouraged Handel to produce more works in this style, resulting in the emergence of the English oratorio. Samson was first performed in 1743, after the success of Messiah. The powerful narrative tells of the development of Samson from the pitiful, blind victim of Dalila to the destroyer of the Philistines. Betrayed by Dalila, his Philistine wife, who has revealed the secret of his supernatural strength to his enemies, Samson is brought, blinded, to Gaza, where the Philistines celebrate the festival day of their god, Dagon. Although he bewails his fate at first, he is eventually convinced that he can use his strength to bring down the temple of the Philistines upon them and himself.

Musically, the oratorio is comparatively richly orchestrated, and Handel’s use of music to depict character is well illustrated by the contrast between the solemn choruses of the Hebrews and the swagger of the Philistines. Dalila’s attempt to woo Samson with her profession of continued love for him is seductive, while the braggadocio of the taunting giant Harapha is evident in his arias. With the services of professional soloists and the London Ulysses Orchestra, Newbury Choral Society is hoping to make this a memorable performance, inspired as always by the indefatigable Cathal Garvey.
